Check whether a raincoat fits the weather, the dog’s movement and the drying routine before judging it by coverage alone.
1. Equating thicker with more suitable
Consider temperature, activity and the individual dog rather than buying the warmest lining by default. Watch comfort during use. A raincoat should not be used to justify walking in conditions unsuitable for the animal.
2. Measuring only back length
Use the maker’s full size guide, including relevant neck and chest measurements. Check usable adjustment. A correct back length can coexist with restricted movement or pressure elsewhere on the garment.
3. Ignoring toileting clearance
During an indoor fitting, inspect the underside and watch ordinary movement. The coat must not obstruct elimination or repeatedly become soiled because of its cut. Choose another fit if the problem cannot be resolved as designed.
4. Routing the leash awkwardly
Check the opening against the normal harness or collar. Do not attach the leash to a decorative coat loop unless explicitly designed for that purpose. Keep the underlying walking equipment correctly fitted.
5. Washing technical fabric like ordinary laundry
Read instructions for finish, lining and fasteners. Use only permitted methods and products. A familiar household cycle can damage a garment whose coating or seam treatment needs different care.
6. Folding the coat while damp
Inspect lining, seams and closures before storage. Provide the drying arrangement the instructions require. Repeatedly putting away a wet coat can create another cleaning problem even when the outside looks acceptable.
7. Dismissing signs of discomfort
Watch hesitation, restricted movement and rubbing rather than assuming the dog must adapt. Remove the coat and reassess. A weather accessory is useful only while it supports a comfortable manageable walk.
Inspect after the first ordinary wet walk
Check the lining, closures and contact areas, then follow the drying instructions. Note where mud or water collects and whether the dog moved comfortably. A problem consistently caused by the coat’s cut is a fit issue, not necessarily a need for more coverage. Keep the normal walking equipment correctly arranged throughout.
