A tall cat tree is not automatically a useful one. The resting platforms must fit the cat, and the route between them must be manageable. Start with where the cat likes to watch, stretch and sleep, then choose a layout that supports those activities. Stability matters more than the number of platforms printed on the box.

Measure platforms rather than overall height

Look for the usable surface of each bed, the size of enclosed entrances and the distance between levels. Bolsters and raised edges reduce lying room. A large cat may outgrow a tiny top basket even when the total weight rating looks generous. For more than one cat, consider whether each can get down without passing through a platform already occupied by another animal.

Examine the base and connections

A broad base and properly fitted joints help resist movement, but assembly quality matters too. Follow the instructions and use all required anchors. Do not substitute a nearby curtain rod or furniture handle for the specified fixing. Check bolts after the initial settling period as instructed. Stop access if the tree rocks, a platform rotates or a joint starts separating; a decorative cover can hide damaged construction.

Compare scratching and resting surfaces

Sisal, carpet and other coverings offer different textures. Use the cat's existing preferences as a clue, without assuming one material suits every cat. Check whether worn posts or pads can be replaced. Look for loose loops, exposed staples and edges where a claw could catch. A removable cushion may be easy to wash, while glued carpet around a cavity can be more difficult to clean thoroughly.

Plan placement and an ordinary-use check

Leave clearance from window hardware, blinds and objects the cat could knock over. Keep a safe route to and from the tree. After assembly, check each level before allowing access and then observe how the cat uses it. Hesitation may reflect a difficult gap rather than lack of interest. A lower stable tree with a generous platform can be more useful than a tall crowded structure.
