A window perch combines a sleeping surface with a mounting system. Both need to suit the installation. A platform that fits your cat can still be unsuitable for a particular frame or glass surface. Begin with the window and the manufacturer's mounting requirements; do not start by assuming a published weight limit applies to every installation.
Identify what supports the load
Some perches rest on a sill, others use brackets, clamps or suction cups. Each has specific surface and clearance requirements. Check that the intended support is compatible and that installation will not interfere with opening, locking or maintaining the window. Do not attach hardware to a surface the maker has not approved. If the required fixing cannot be made reliably, choose a freestanding alternative.
Allow room for the whole cat
Compare the platform's usable dimensions with the cat's stretched sleeping position. Check the entry route and the distance from a stable starting point. A narrow shelf can be awkward for a large cat even when the rated load is sufficient. Consider the effect of landing and movement rather than viewing the cat as a motionless weight. Do not exceed the stated limit with two cats sharing a one-cat perch.
Inspect the installation regularly
Follow cleaning and reattachment directions for the specific mount. Check connectors, fabric supports and attachment points before use and at the intervals the maker specifies. Remove access if a cup loosens, a bracket shifts or fabric begins to tear. A quick visual glance from across the room may miss a partly detached fixing. Avoid placing hard or sharp objects below the perch.
Keep the window area usable and safe
Keep blind cords inaccessible and do not rely on an ordinary insect screen to contain a cat. Maintain ventilation and any emergency access the window provides. Check whether direct sun makes the resting area uncomfortable during part of the day. If a stable installation is not possible, a properly positioned cat tree can offer a view without attaching equipment to the window.
