A scratching surface earns its place when the cat chooses it. Hiding a small post in an unused corner may save visual space while leaving the sofa as the more convenient option. Start with the locations and orientations your cat already prefers, then find a stable product that fits those habits.
Observe the direction and location
Notice whether your cat scratches a vertical furniture edge, a horizontal rug or an angled surface. Try a matching orientation near the existing activity rather than assuming every cat wants a narrow upright post. Place a suitable option near a resting area if that is where scratching happens. Avoid punishing the behavior; provide an acceptable place for an ordinary feline activity.
Keep enough usable scratching area
A vertical post should allow a comfortable stretch without the cat immediately reaching its top. A horizontal pad needs room for the cat to position itself, not just the paws. Measure the usable surface and compare it with the cat's body. Compact products can work well when they preserve that function. A tiny decorative scratcher is not an equivalent simply because it uses the same material.
Prevent rocking and sliding
Check the base on the actual floor. The scratcher should not move unexpectedly when used. Follow mounting instructions for wall or furniture attachments and avoid makeshift fixings that can pull loose. Inspect for exposed staples, unraveling coverings and loose fibers. If the surface shifts, solve the stability problem before concluding that the cat dislikes the texture.
Maintain an accepted option
Vacuum or clean according to the product directions and replace worn sections when they become unsafe or unusable. Do not remove every familiar scratcher at once. Place a replacement nearby and let the cat explore it. In a multi-cat household, distribute options so one animal cannot block access to all of them. A couple of well-positioned surfaces may work better than one elaborate structure.
